Auckland vs Christchurch – 26 April

Auckland vs Christchurch

Auckland Roller Derby is back for our 2014 season harder, stronger and faster than ever, and ready to take on Christchurch’s Dead End Derby in their third annual season opener.

If you’ve never been to a roller derby game before, now’s your chance to come and see the sport for yourself. Since landing in New Zealand in 2006, roller derby has gone from strength to strength.

Auckland Roller Derby’s first match up of the year is against South Island battlers Dead End Derby. Christchurch has taken it’s fair share of knocks over the years, but this hasn’t dampened the skaters’ spirits – after two losses to Auckland last year, Dead End Derby will be coming out strong to prove that the people of their city can rise to any challenge.

Auckland Roller Derby is coming out of a 2013 season packed with excellent game play against national and international teams, ending the season with 2nd place in the finals of New Zealand’s national roller derby tournament, Derby Royale.
With a brand spanking new line up and new rule set, come watch Auckland Roller Derby as you’ve never seen them before.

SEASON CLOSER: Auckland Roller Derby vs Palmerston North

ARDL-vs-palmy-event-findaAuckland’s roller derby season comes to a close this month, but the women in blue are going out with a bang, rekindling their legendary rivalry with Swamp City Roller Rats from Palmerston North.

Auckland roller derby has proved itself to be a force to be reckoned with against New Zealand teams, but recently fell to both Melbourne and Brisbane when they visited from across the ditch. Hungry for a win to finish out the season, Auckland will be bringing their A game against the fearsome women from down the line.

The ladies of Palmerston North are known for their hard-hitting style of roller derby, and after falling short of Auckland’s points total earlier this year, Palmy will be back with a vengeance and ready to prove to the City of Sails what they’re made of.
This is your last chance to see Auckland Roller Derby in action this year, so head along to YMCA Pitt Street on September 21st to find out why roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the world today.

Tickets are just $15 from Eventfinda.
Doors to this exciting event are at 6pm; game starts at 7pm.

Auckland Roller Derby vs Northern Brisbane Rollers

ARDLVS-NBR-Eventfinda

The days are short, the nights are long but the fastest game on eight wheels is once again sure to set the City of Sails on fire on August 24, when Auckland Roller Derby takes on the might of the Northern Brisbane Rollers.

Auckland Roller Derby has had a cracker season so far. The women in blue and white have beaten teams from Christchurch and Palmerston North, and fought valiantly against the victorious Victorians from Melbourne, Australia, who visited recently.

Auckland’s next challengers – Northern Brisbane Rollers – are currently ranked third in the southern hemisphere; does the homegrown team have what it takes to triumph over the women from across the ditch?

If you have never been to a game of roller derby before, now is your chance to deck yourself out in Auckland’s proud blues and scream for the home side. Roller derby is a fast-paced, strategic and full contact sport, played out with finesse, grace and grit… and it’s all on eight wheels!

ARDL celebrates Auckland Pride 2013

427182_417964314951325_1851072246_n

Auckland Roller Derby is hitting the streets this month to support the return of Auckland’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival – Auckland Pride 2013.

Neighbourhood 1

Our first Pride push was in the form of an interview, with coach and team co-captain Hannah Jennings was featured in The New Zealand Herald’s “Neighbourhood” section. Hannah talks about why she loves living in Western Springs (along with most of the team!) and what the team is doing during this Auckland Pride festival.

Hannah says:

“A lot of our team live around this area. Our team is called the Auckland Roller Derby and we have the HQ here at our place. Even though we have to travel to do a lot of our skating, this is where the team hangs out.

“We like to head to the skate park under the Bond St bridge. The skaters there are pretty respectful; there’s no tagging, and people look after it. A lot of new skaters are a bit intimidated by skate parks, but the Bond St one is relaxing. There are no crazy scooter riders trying to take your head off. When you’re in your 20s you’re less gung-ho than when you’re seven or eight.”

Check out the full story HERE.

604155_417964091618014_1866585991_n The team was next seen on Sunday 10 February at the iconic Big Gay Out, shaking buckets and collecting coins for Get It On!

Get it On! is a community-focused programme designed to create a condom culture across Aotearoa New Zealand. Get it On! encourages all gay and bisexual men to use condoms and lube every time they have sex. It is a sexy, upbeat call to ‘love your condom’. ‘Love your condom’ is about moving us past all those lame excuses not to be safe, and inspires us to not just tolerate, but love the sexy confidence that comes with condom covered cocks.

Auckland Roller Derby would like to thank everyone who met the team at the gate with smiles, waves and loads of cash for the campaign.

Screen shot 2013-02-11 at 3.48.29 PMNext weekend marks the return of fabulosity to Ponsonby Road, as the Auckland Pride Parade 2013 gets moving. With over 40 entries expected, the parade will be the highlight of the Pride Festival celebrating the Rainbow Community in the greater Auckland area, New Zealand and overseas. Auckland Roller Derby will be there with bells on – look for the bright blue ladies on wheels and their very official looking parade marshals in black and white stripes!
